Are there differences between "regular" stereo speakers and home theater speakers?
No. Speakers are speakers. They all have woofers, tweeters, etc. If the term ' difference' needs to be used, than it would only mean that using 'regular' speakers near your television is a no-no. Home theater speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent discoloring across the screen. Some others might say that another difference is that home theater speakers should be typically "matched". This means they have been designed to work together to produce sounds at the same levels and tones. Essentially, as sound waves travel from the speaker, the frequencies travel at different rates of speed. If you have five speakers of the same design and components, the sound reaching your ears will be more 'uniformed'. Speakers of different manufacturers or using different size components can and will vary the sound to a certain degree. If you had a home theater setup with five different brands and types of speakers the sound would be there, but not in the same way that five matching speakers can produce. It has been argued that if need be, two matching speakers can be used for the fronts, a different pair of matching speakers can be used for the rears, while a third speaker, different again, can be used for the center.

Again, your ears will tell you the proper answer. I do not think the 'speaker police' will be banging down your door on this one.
