What is "virtual surround" or "spatialized surround"?

Virtual surround is a process of attempting to play back the surround effects of a multi-track recording with only two speakers. Many of today's televisions will incorporate this feature. In some instances this works quite well, however virtual surround in no way compares in quality to true surround sound.
